Although many restaurants and companies choose to buy antibiotic laden meat, some restaurants have successfully excluded meats raised with antibiotics from their inventories. For example, the popular Mexican restaurant Chipotle places a heavy emphasis on using natural ingredients within their food. In fact, the Chipotle website notes that 100% of its pork comes from pigs that “are never given antibiotics and are fed a vegetarian diet”(We Treat Them Like Animals). Furthermore, Chipotle also receives 100% of its chicken from manufacturers who do not feed the chicken antibiotics; also, over 60% of beef used at Chipotle does not contain antibiotics (We Treat Them Like Animals and Ells 3). To date, Chipotle currently has an impressive 1,023 restaurants open for business; this clearly shows that avoiding the use of meat raised with antibiotics can be implemented within a successful business venture (Chipotle Mexican Grill).

In addition to these efforts, co-CEO of Chipotle, Steve Ells spoke before the House Rules Committee on July 13, 2009 regarding the importance of using sustainable food, including humanely raised natural meat, within Chipotle Restaurants. During his speech, Ells noted that when he discovered his original pork supplier bought meat from CAFO-like organizations, he researched alternatives and switched to humanely raised, natural meat, raised without antibiotics (2-3). Ells emphasized that even when the price of meat rose, Chipotle continued to use all natural, antibiotic-free meat because this kind of meat is “Food with Integrity” (3). Overall, Chipotle remains a shining example of a company that works to incorporate and justify to others, the importance of using naturally raised meat.
